EPIC NEWS NETWORK

WHAT IS EPIC'S NEWS NETWORK?

EPIC News Network (ENN) is Oklahoma’s first and only statewide journalism program for high school students. ENN teaches students the principles of newsgathering, reporting, writing, editing, photojournalism, audio-visual production and ethics.

WHAT IS EPIC'S NEWS NETWORK?

ENN students report and photograph events statewide, covering their communities, actions of state leaders and events that shape the state’s cultural and political landscape. Veteran journalists M. Scott Carter and Phil Cross oversee the production of news stories, photographic essays and podcasts. Under their leadership, ENN has won 25 state high school journalism awards.

Carter and Cross serve as co-directors. Carter was most recently a journalism professor at Oklahoma City Community College and the faculty advisor to its award-winning student newspaper. Cross came to ENN from KOKH FOX 25 in Oklahoma City and won an Emmy in 2017 for his government reporting work. Both men are members of the Journalism Education Association and Oklahoma Scholastic Media.

ENN facilitates professionalism and real-world experiences to make students better consumers of media and advocates of fact throughout the state. ENN is not a promotional tool for EPIC and operates with the same degree of independence as other high school journalism programs.

All content is subject to expert third-party review. Each participating student is charged with the mandate to “be curious about the world around them and constantly be on a quest for the truth.”

“I have become a much better writer not only in journalism, but in everyday writing. I have learned how to do audio editing and to do broadcasts in front of a camera. I have learned how to interview well and fact-check sources. This is the best journalism program I could imagine and the teachers are incredible.”
